DENVER - A 31-year-old Denver man has been charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty after two American bulldogs were found dead and three others were found severely malnourished.
Prosecutors say the dogs belonged to Chunie Smith.
Investigators were alerted to the case when the Denver Animal Shelter learned of two dead dogs in a container placed in an alley behind Groves Street and West Conejos Place. Investigators also found another adult bulldog and two puppies in that same location.
The surviving dogs appeared to be starving, the Denver District Attorney's Office said.
Smith was charged with three misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty and two counts of aggravated animal cruelty.
Smith has been released on a $1,400 bond. He is scheduled to appear in Denver court on April 22.
