Man accused of holding baby hostage in Greeley standoff Saturday

GREELEY, Colo. - A man is accused of holding a baby hostage in a Greeley apartment Saturday.

Michael Mendez, 31, tried to jump out a window of an apartment in the 1100 block of 26th Ave. during a standoff, according to the Greeley Police Department.

Mendez then threatened the baby with a piece of broken glass, officers said.

Mendez knew the baby's mother and was hiding out in the home, Greeley police spokesperson Susan West told 7NEWS.

Officers had been looking for Mendez "for a while," West said.

Officers used a Taser to take Mendez into custody. He was arrested on suspicion of first-degree burglary, several counts of child abuse, reckless endangerment and a restraining order violation.

The baby was not hurt and was reunited with his mother, police said.

Mendez has a lengthy criminal record, including domestic violence, theft and escape charges.
