Aurora police have issued a summons to a man accused of firing shots at a fleeing robbery suspect.

Police say Avery Nelson pursued the suspect on Saturday after a robbery at a Subway sandwich shop at 15220 East Iliff Avenue.

An employee told police a masked man entered the store and demanded money. The employee scuffled with the suspect during the robbery and the man fled.

Police say Nelson, who was outside of the store, heard the commotion and chased the suspect through a shopping center, spraying the suspect with pepper spray.

Authorities say Nelson fired warning shots in the air when they reached East Iliff and South Fraser Street, and then fired at the suspect several times as the man drove away on Fraser.

Police later found the vehicle abandoned at South Joplin Way and South Idalia Street.

Nelson was issued a summons for suspicion of reckless endangerment and discharging a weapon. Police say he created a substantial risk to the public during the pursuit of the suspect.

The employee was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867.
