Longmont police catch assault suspect Kurt Jones who drove away before police had a warrant

LONGMONT, Colo. - Longmont Police have caught a suspect who drove away before they obtained a warrant Wednesday. He was found at his mother's house.

Kurt Jones is suspected of attempting to strangle a neighbor who lived near his home, Longmont Police Commander Jeffrey Satur wrote in a crime bulletin.

"This assault was unprovoked and the victim did not know Jones before the assault," Satur wrote.

Jones was caught at 11:18 a.m. Thursday at a home in the 7500 block of Dale Court in Westminster. Satur said the arrest occurred without incident.

The alleged assault occurred early Wednesday morning. A SWAT standoff occurred later that morning on Meadow Court, but ended with police "backing off" because the badly injured victim was unable to identify his attacker in a photo lineup.

An arrest warrant with a $75,000 bond was issued for Jones on the counts of second degree assault with a deadly weapon, second degree assault causing serious bodily injury and aggravated robbery. All of those counts are felonies.

Officers lost sight of Jones around 3:20 p.m. Wednesday, when officers followed him away from his home. He was driving a red Ford Mustang with license plate 296-XAF but the officers had not yet obtained the arrest warrant from the judge.
