Longmont Police searching for driver of fiery gas station hit-and-run

Fireball erupts after driver backs into gas pumps

LONGMONT, Colo. - Longmont police are searching for the driver of a white Ford pickup who hit a gas pump Monday night and sped off as it erupted into flames.

The hit-and-run happened just before 7:30 p.m., at the Sav-O-Mat self service gas stations off 6th Avenue and Main Street.

Police said the driver was backing in to get gas when he hit the pump, causing an immediate fireball.  Surveillance photos show the white truck speeding off with flames shooting out the back end.

“I was thinking like James Bond explosion,” said McKenna Eccles.

McKenna Eccles pulled out her cell phone and began shooting video from across the street.  It shows the pumps go up in flames, the fire flaring up as an employee tries to save her car just feet away.

“There was people running away from it and then the fire,” Eccles said.

Longmont Fire put out the flames that left two pumps charred and melted.  There were no injuries.

Police said the driver took off northbound on Main Street.  He’s described as a white man in his 30s or 40s.  The vehicle was a white Ford pickup 1980’s to 1990’s model, with a white camper shell topper.  Police said the vehicle had a temporary tag on it.
