BROOMFIELD, Colo. -- Legacy Head Football Coach Wayne Voorhees returned to practice on Wednesday nearly three weeks after he was critically injured in a deadly school bus crash.
The crash happened Sept. 11 at Denver International Airport while the team was heading back from playing a team in California.
"It's been a long couple of weeks, but I feel pretty good considering," said Voorhees.
The bus driver was killed in the crash.
Voorhees was one of three coaches critically injured. He said he suffered three facial fractures and a concussion.
"I was pretty concussed the first couple days," he said. "I'm just happy to be back."
Voorhees said he's not well enough yet to go back to teaching full time, but is focused now on the kids and practice.
"It's unbelievable, you talk about therapeutic and just getting back to the kids," he said.
Voorhees said he doesn't remember a whole lot about the crash other than getting on the bus and waking up in the hospital.
He said the tragedy has brought the team closer together, and also changed his outlook on life.
"When you start looking at friends and family and stuff, you cherish that a little bit more than maybe you previously did," said Voorhees.
He's now looking forward to leading his team again under the Friday night lights against Overland High School.
"I'm excited to see what we do this year," said Voorhees.
He called the community support "unbelievable."
Voorhees also provided updates on the other two coaches who were injured.
He said coach Matt Kroupa remains in the hospital, but is doing better each day. Coach Kyle Rider is out of the hospital, but has not yet returned to practice.
