PUEBLO, Colo. – Investigators are not giving up on a case that has grown cold.
Authorities announced Tuesday multiple searches are being conducted in the Pueblo area in hopes of collecting enough evidence to bring charges in the Kelsie Schelling case. The renewed efforts were prompted by recent leads, but authorities declined to specify the nature of those leads.
Agents from multiple units, including the Pueblo Police Department and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, are searching areas in southwestern Pueblo, the last known area the Denver woman was last seen.
The pregnant 21-year-old woman who was last seen in February 2013when she left Denver to drive to Pueblo to see her boyfriend and the father of her unborn child, Donthe Lucas. The only trace left behind was her abandoned car, found four days later at St. Mary-Corwin Hospital. Her body has never been found.
Lucas has long been considered a suspect in the case but he has never been convicted on any charges. Investigators were at his home in April searching for evidence, but it’s not known what was found.
Authorities will be just as tight-lipped on the details about the nature of the recent searches.
“While we cannot offer any comment about this active investigation, we want the community to be aware that this case remains a priority for the Pueblo Police Department,” said Pueblo Police Chief Troy Davenport. “Our police department is committed to helping to bring justice to Kelsie and for her family.”
