Lakewood apartment fire: Teen arrested, accused of arson and multiple counts of attempted murder

Fire destroyed at least four units

LAKEWOOD, Colo. - A Lakewood teen was arrested in connection with a fire that destroyed at least four units Friday night, police said Sunday morning.

The fire started on the third floor of the SunPointe at Lakewood Estates Condominiums on West Atlantic Place just after 8 p.m. Friday.

Jalen Berg, 19, was in a physical fight with his father earlier in the evening in unit 305, detectives said Sunday. Arson investigators believe Berg intentionally set fire to their apartment in retaliation.

Police said the fight was believed to be over the use of a vehicle, and that Berg hit his father with a baseball bat before starting the fire.

At just 19 years old, Berg already has a criminal record. In May, Golden police arrested him on charges ranging from DUI to drug possession. A month later, in June, Lakewood police arrested him on another DUI charge and other weapons related charges.

Home video shot by a man who lives in the complex showed flames engulfing the entire unit and stairwell in seconds. You can see a man lying on the ground near the building. Witnesses told 7NEWS the man jumped from the window of the third floor.

Berg was one of two people transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

After Berg was released from the hospital he was arrested and was being held at the Jefferson County Jail, investigators said Sunday.

Berg is being held for investigation on the following charges: first degree arson, multiple accounts of attempted murder, child abuse, felony criminal mischief, and felony menacing.

Detectives are still investigating this case.  Officials said additional charges are a strong possibility.
