Kayaker dies in accident on Arkansas River; Johnathan Kennedy fell in water on Pine Creek Rapids

CHAFFEE COUNTY, Colo. - Authorities in Chaffee County said a kayaker died Friday in an accident on the Arkansas River.

Johnathan M. Kennedy, 40, of Fayetteville, Arkansas, was kayaking in the Pine Creek Rapids section of the Arkansas River at around 2:49 p.m. when his kayak overturned in those same rapids, according to the Chaffee County Sheriff's Office.

Kennedy, who was wearing a personal floatation device and helmet, fell into the water at the time his kayak overturned.

Deputies said several kayakers on the river in the same area tried to rescue Kennedy, however they were unsuccessful. 

Kennedy was finally pulled from the river approximately 1 mile south of the Pine Creek Rapids.

The Pine Creek Rapid section of the Arkansas River is about 10 miles north of Buena Vista, Colorado.

First responders with Chaffee County EMS were called to the scene and administered CPR, but Kennedy was pronounced dead at the scene.
