ARVADA, Colo. -- Arvada Police are investigating how 17-year old Skylar Hamilton died as she was crossing Wadsworth Boulevard Sunday.

Skylar’s mother, Erin Simpson, says she knew something was wrong when she didn't hear from her daughter who told her she was going to the park.

Simpson then started to drive around to look for her daughter. She saw police near the intersection of Wadsworth Boulevard and Ralston Road. She approached police, and they told her daughter was hit as she was crossing the road.

Simpson says police told her that her daughter crossed illegally and was struck by a driver heading southbound.  Simpson says it’s hard for her to grasp how her daughter died because she knew road safety.

“She was in construction. She was a flagger. She knows road safety. I do struggle with the fact that she wouldn't use the crosswalks safely,” said Simpson.

Arvada Police won't comment to Denver 7 on the nature of what happened but say the investigation is still ongoing.

“She wasn't stupid, and if I find out that she made that mistake, I will live with that. I just don't believe it,” said Simpson.

Skylar’s funeral is set to take place Monday.
