Inmate mistakenly released from Jefferson County Jail recaptured after two days on the run

Damon Slayton was released due to 'human error'

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. - Damon Slayton, the inmate mistakenly released from the Jefferson County Jail, was recaptured Thursday morning.

Slayton, 41, was being held at the Jefferson County Jail for a parole violation when he was inadvertently released Tuesday. The mistake, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said Thursday, was due to "human error."

Sheriff’s Office spokesman Mark Techmeyer said Slayton’s original charges were for theft, burglary and robbery.

He was rearrested at Broadway and Larimer St. in LoDo Thursday morning and returned to the Jefferson County jail.

The Sheriff's Office wrote that an "improved 'check and balance' system" was put in place to verify inmates are supposed to be released.
