Illegal drugs accidentally sent to newspaper

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. - A Western Colorado newspaper received a very trippy letter to the editor: a misdirected postal package containing suspected psychoactive mushrooms.

The (Glenwood Springs) Post-Independent reported Wednesday that the package sat unclaimed for two months before staffers made the unexpected discovery this week ( ). The package was opened on Monday to reveal an undetermined amount of suspected psilocybin mushrooms.

The U.S. Postal Service Priority Mail package, which was about 12 inches square and 8 inches deep, had an original postal date of mid-July, and was returned undeliverable to the newspaper office around mid-August. It had a recipient address in South Bend, Ind.

The find was turned over to the Glenwood Springs Police Department. The inter-agency Two Rivers Drug Enforcement Team is investigating.
