CLEAR CREEK COUNTY, Colo. - The I-70 Twin Tunnels construction project is on time to finish by the mandated date of December 21, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.
The project, near Idaho Springs, will expand the eastbound tunnel to three lanes, help flatten out the curve at Hidden Valley and expand eastbound I-70 to three lanes from the tunnel to U.S. 6.
The third lane east of the Hidden Valley interchange opened last week.
Since April 19, crews have moved more than 19,700 cubic yards of rock from the 635-foot-long tunnel.
Improving the Twin Tunnels area is one of several efforts CDOT says it will take in the next several years to cut travel time and accidents on I-70, which sees heavy traffic flows, especially on weekends.
