I-25 closed near 15th Street overnight; starts again Sunday night for girder installation work

DENVER - Installation of girders for the southern half of the new 15th Street bridge over Interstate 25 will close part of the interstate for two consecutive nights.

One lane of I-25 in each direction was closed between Interstate 70 and Speer Boulevard for the work starting at 7 p.m. Friday and Sunday nights. A second lane in each direction will close at 9 p.m. and all lanes will close at 11 p.m.

The lanes are expected to reopen by 9 a.m. Saturday or by 5:30 a.m. Monday.

In addition, 15th Street over I-25 was closed from 10 p.m. Friday until 8 a.m. on Saturday  and will close against Sunday night until 5:30 a.m. on Monday.

The Colorado Department of Transportation suggests these detours:

- Southbound I-25: Exit onto westbound I-70 and take I-70 to Federal Boulevard. Travel south on Federal Boulevard to Speer Boulevard and then south on Speer Boulevard to I-25.

- Northbound I-25: Exit onto northbound Speer Boulevard and take Speer Boulevard to Federal Boulevard. Then travel north on Federal Boulevard to I-70. Take I-70 east to I-25.

- 15th Street: Eastbound 15th Street thru traffic will be detoured on Zuni Street to Speer Boulevard. Westbound 15th Street thru traffic will be detoured on Wewatta Street to Speer Boulevard.  Local and business access will be allowed on 15th Street to Central Street for eastbound traffic and to Platte Street for westbound traffic.

After the girder work, work on the bridge deck is expected to last from Monday through Thursday.

On those days, one lane of northbound and southbound I-25 between I-70 and Speer Boulevard will be closed starting at 7 p.m. with a second lane closing at 9 p.m. and a third lane closing at 11 p.m. each night. All lanes will reopen by 5:30 a.m. the next morning.

The ramp from westbound Speer Boulevard to northbound I-25 and the ramp from southbound I-25 to 20th Street will also be closed from 11 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. each night.

The bridge deck and girder work is part of an $11.7 million project to replace the the 15th Street bridge over I-25 and add auxiliary lanes on southbound I-25 from just south of 20th Street to just south of Speer Boulevard.
