WESTMINSTER, Colo. - Several homes were evacuated on Thursday night after a family found something suspicious in Westminster.

The family was near 92nd Avenue and Lowell Boulevard cleaning the home of an elderly family member when they found the items.

That elderly family member said he thought the items might be some old explosives that were related to a job he once had.

The family called police, officers called in the Adams County Bomb Squad.

Nine homes were evacuated and some streets were closed while the bomb squad sent in a robot to check out the items.

Westminster Police said the items turned out to be road flares.

The evacuated neighbors were allowed to return home at 2 a.m.

The bomb squad did take some items from the garage so they could be disposed of safely outside the city, police said.
