ESTES PARK, Colo. – A late-season snowstorm led to the collapse of a historic barn at Elkhorn Lodge in Estes Park.

Estes Park News, Inc. said the barn collapsed under the weight of about two feet of wet, heavy snow.

The barn hasn’t been used for some time and there were no animals or people inside the structure at the time of the collapse.

The snow also brought down tree branches and caused power outages in the area. The American Red Cross established an emergency shelter at Presbyterian Community Church, 1700 Brodie Ave. in Estes Park. The shelter opened at 5 p.m. and staff were on hand to provide food and emotional/minor medical support.

Officials in Estes Park said city offices would be closed Friday due to the snow.
