DENVER - Denver police named a suspect Sunday after a Hispanic man was shot and killed early Saturday morning in east Denver.
Denver police responded to reports of gunshots at the Lowry Heights Apartment Complex at 8000 E. 12th Avenue, near Verbena Park, around 4 a.m.
"I wasn't quite sure what was happening," said neighbor Peter Cohn.
Neighbors said they heard yelling in the parking lot followed by a series of 8 to 12 shots.
"It sounded like loud pops like firecrackers but too fast. One of my neighbors that lives on the ground floor on the other side here says that someone was banging on his door right before he heard the gunshots and he didn't open it," said Anna Baker.
Police tweeted that they found a man fatally wounded in the rear parking lot. The victim was later identified as 27-year-old Vincente Penaloza. Officers said they are looking for 18-year-old Tyree Darrell Bowen in connection with the murder.
At least two cars were shot in the crossfire. A van parked near where the body was found had a bullet hole through the back window. Another bullet shattered the tail light.
"My car was shot in the trunk apparently. They're looking at it right now," said Cohn.
Residents said it's not unusual for gang activity to spill over from the nearby park but police have not said whether the shooting was gang related.
Anyone with information Bowen can call Crime Stoppers and remain anonymous at 720-913-7867. Tipsters may earn up to a $2,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of Browen.
