Parole absconder killed by officers in Evans

A parole absconder was shot and killed during a confrontation with police officers on Thursday.

Evans police said officers stopped a suspicious vehicle at 1:25 a.m. near Highway 85 and 40th Street.

One man was taken into custody, but a second man ran, police said.

Evans officers said they tried to chase the man by lost him. They called in officers from the LaSalle Police Department, Greeley Police Department and Weld County Sheriff's Office for help.

Greeley police said that group established a perimeter.

At 2:47 a.m., the suspect was confronted by an Evans officer. The suspect fired his gun at the officer and got away again, Greeley police said.

About thirty minutes later, the man was spotted again.

"After shouting to the officers, 'Shoot me, kill me!', the male raised his weapon at the officers," Greeley police said. "The officers discharged their weapons at the suspect.

The man was taken to the hospital, but he did not survive.

Greeley police said initial indications are that two Greeley officers and one LaSalle officer fired at the suspect.

The Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the shooting. Greeley police said there is body camera video of the shooting and it is being reviewed.

Authorities have not yet released the parole absconder's name, but they did say he was wanted on felony charges.
