Highlands Ranch resident convicted of unlawful sexual contact with a Wheat Ridge grandmother

GOLDEN, Colo. - In less than four hours on Monday, a jury decided a suspect on trial for unlawful sexual contact with an 81-year-old grandmother was guilty of several felonies.

Michael Steven Arreola, 58, of Highlands Ranch, was found naked in a bed with the victim on July 31, 2012.

He was discovered in the Wheat Ridge home by the victim's granddaughter, the District Attorney's Office says. The woman covered her grandmother with a blanket and went next door to get her father.

Arreola called 911 himself to report that he'd been threatened by the victim's son, but Wheat Ridge police arrived to find the victim drunk and vomiting.

Arreola, a friend of the victim's ex-husband, had taken the victim out drinking at a bar in Edgewater earlier that day, the DA's office says.

"As they continued to drink, the victim was seen losing her balance and falling into a wall in the bar. Arreola and employees at the bar had to help her into Arreola's truck," DA spokeswoman Pam Russell wrote about the case. "A neighbor testified that he saw Arreola dragging the victim into her home around 6 p.m. because she was unable to walk on her own."

The jury found Arreola guilty of unlawful sexual contact with an at-risk adult, attempted unlawful sexual contact of an at-risk adult and two counts of attempted sexual assault of an at-risk adult, all felonies.

He will be sentenced no Aug. 29 and could face a sentence of probation for 20 years to life, or a sentence of between 8 and 24 years to life in prison. Currently, he is free on $1,000 bond.
