Firefighters control wildfire in Monument; barns, cars destroyed

MONUMENT, Colo. - Firefighters controlled a wildfire in Monument on Friday morning.

High winds fanned the fire that started in a barn near Hay Creek and West Baptist Road, just west of Interstate 25, our sister station KRDO-TV reported.  Winds gusts were approaching 60 mph.

A thick plume of smoke was visible for miles at the height of the fire, which spread to nearby grass.

The barn and some cars were destroyed by the fire, the station reported.

Firefighters were concerned because the fire was burning near a subdivision, but crews were able to control the blaze.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
