7NEWS discovered there is no system in place for gun shops to verify if they're being sold a stolen gun. There is also no database that exists as a gun show or for private sales.
At pawn shops, police are notified and provided the serial number when someone brings a gun in to sell. Before the pawn shop can sell the gun, police run the serial number through a database to make sure it's not a stolen gun.
Gun stores do provide a gun's serial number to Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. The ATF is able to check and see if the gun is stolen, but that is not done at the store level.
In many cases, a stolen gun isn't discovered stolen until it's recovered at a crime scene. Once investigators find a weapon at a crime scene, they trace the serial number back to the manufacturer. The manufacturer then tells investigators who the distributor was, and the gun is tracked from owner to owner as part of the investigation.
If you know anything about the burglary or the guns, police ask that you call Parker Police Detective Michael Buoniconti at 303-805-6524 or Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-STOP (7867). Tips can also be sent via text to 274637. Police said tipsters may remain anonymous, with no pressure to reveal their identity, and still collect a reward.
