Gender, identity and cause of death of remains found on Lookout Mountain remain a mystery

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. - In an update Monday afternoon, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office says skeletal remains found on Lookout Mountain remain mysterious.

The remains were found by hikers around 4:40 p.m. Sunday, according to Sheriff's spokeswoman Jacki Kelley. The investigators returned to the area, located off Windy Pass Trail, on Monday.

7NEWS saw yellow crime scene tape blocking a trail in the area, protecting the scene while it was searched for evidence.

Although the remains have been confirmed as human, much of the other information about the body and how it got there are still unknown.

"Gender, identity & cause of death are not yet known," the Sheriff's Office tweeted Monday afternoon.

The remains will be sent to a lab in Texas for testing.
