Garfield County shooting suspect is restaurant owner; friends say suspect helped victim come to US

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. - The primary suspect in a shooting that killed a man and wounded a woman near Glenwood Springs is a restaurant owner who fled the civil war in his native El Salvador.

Fredy Argueta Cabrera, 39, of Carbondale, was being held Friday in the Mesa County jail, a day after turning himself in there.

The shooting happened Wednesday night at an apartment complex south of the Glenwood Springs city limits. The male victim died at a Glenwood Springs area hospital The female victim was transported to Denver for treatment. No other information has been released about the two victims and authorities haven't said whether Caberera knew them.

Restaurant workers told the Glenwood Springs Post Independent that the man who died was also from El Salvador and was brought to the United States by Cabrera. Donations were being taken at Cabrera's El Horizonte restaurant in Carbondale. He also owns a restaurant in Glenwood Springs.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation was called in to help deputies with the investigation.
