COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A funeral for two El Paso County children stabbed to death in a murder-suicide last week will be held Friday.
Sheriff's spokesman Lt. Jeff Kramer said 22-year-old Ethan Courrau stabbed 1-year-old Scarlett Gallagher and 3-year-old Ryan Willhite in a mobile home before stabbing himself, the Colorado Springs Gazette reported. Scarlett was found dead at the scene, while Courrau and Ryan died at a hospital.
Courrau was dating the children's mother, police said.
Kramer told the newspaper that autopsies showed both children died of a stab wound to the neck, while Courrau died of multiple knife wounds.
A neighbor told 7NEWS last week that the children lived with their mother, Katie Kane, in the trailer on their grandmother's property. The deceased suspect, Ethan Courrau, was Katie's boyfriend. He wrote on his Facebook page that he became friends with Katie Kane in July 2012.
It is unclear where the children's mother was during the stabbing, but according to police radio traffic, the children's mother came running out of the trailer, telling her mom that the children were dead. She later reported that Courrau had slit his own throat after the stabbings, according to police radio traffic.
Courrau's mother, Beth Courrau, is a former employee of the Colorado Springs Gazette and provided the newspaper with this statement:
"It is impossible to wrap our minds around this. There are so many unanswered questions of which we may never know the answers. We loved our son deeply. Ethan struggled with being bipolar I, and as his parents we actively helped him seek medical treatment. We had an open dialogue and regularly discussed the challenges of the disease and the importance of treatment. The details of what transpired last night remain unclear and we cannot comment further until the investigation is complete."
Police are still investigating the case.
“This case is still active, and no other details will be shared at this time,” Kramer said in an email to the newspaper.
The funeral for both children is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday, and a private burial will be in Monument.
A memorial account was set up at ENT Federal Credit Union to help pay for the funerals. Contributions to the “Memorial Account for Scarlett and Ryan” can be made at any ENT location.
