A fund has been set up to help raise money for the Denver Police officer shot during a traffic stop this week.
Tony Lopez, Jr., pulled over a driver Tuesday near 38th and Federal, but two minutes later he radio'd for help after being shot multiple times. Investigators believe the driver got out of his car and immediately started shooting at Lopez. Lopez was shot several times, he is in critical condition.
Friends of Lopez said the officer and his wife are expecting their first child and will have extra expenses.
"Tony will have a long road to recovery and will not be able work off-duty to pay for these things for some time," a letter to officers and citizens said.
A fund for Lopez has been set up at the Rocky Mountain Law Enforcement Credit Union, account number 23017285. Donors can call 303-458-6660, send checks by mail, or stop into any of their locations. If mailing a donation, please send it to 700 W. 39th Ave, Denver, CO, 80216, in care of Officer Lopez.
The Denver Police Dept. said they are aware of other funds being established for Lopez, but this is the only one endorsed by DPD and the family.
Lopez is a second-generation police officer. His father is the Denver Police Department's commander in District 6.
Two people are in custody in connection with the shooting - the suspected driver and thesuspect passenger.
