THORNTON, Colo. - Jurors on Friday convicted a man who fled to Washington State after sexually assaulting a 9-year-old girl.
Steve Allen Pierce, 36, was convicted of assaulting the in a parking lot near 91st Avenue and Huron Street in Thornton on May 26.
7NEWS previously reported that police were not alerted until three days later after the crime, when the girl was taken to North Suburban Medical Center. Police said she was taken to the medical center and then transferred to Children's Hospital because of injuries suffered during the sexual assault.
Pierce's records show he was convicted of first-degree molestation in Washington State in the 1990s, when he was either 12 or 15 years old. Since he was convicted when he was a juvenile, he was not required to appear on the state's online sex offender registry.
The new conviction included the crimes of sexual assault by a person in a position of trust, child abuse causing serious bodily injury, aggravated sexual assault on a child by use of threats and sexual assault on a child. All of those crimes are felonies.
He faces a sentence of between 10 years and life in prison when he is sentenced Tuesday.
