FOUNTAIN, Colo. - The parents of a 3-year-old Fountain toddler may face charges after police say the boy accidentally shot himself in the foot with a .40-caliber handgun.

Police told KRDO-TV the boy found the semi-automatic handgun in the master bedroom of his home on Wednesday. The boy's mother was home at the time but did not witness the shooting, police said.

The boy was transported to a hospital and is expected to recover.

Police said their investigation is continuing. The Department of Human Services is also investigating.

"The Fountain Police Department encourages responsible gun ownership and would like to remind citizens to take care when handling or storing firearms," they said in a release.

Police reminded gun owners to always use a trigger lock, gun safe or similar device to keep weapons out of the reach of children.
