FORT COLLINS, Colo. - A Fort Collins man has given his 200th round of blood platelets this week.

Ed Miller said he began donating platelets "because I can" due to high platelet counts in his blood, reported the Fort Collins Coloradoan.

Staff at the donation center estimate Miller has helped close to 600 people.

Platelets are small cell fragments that circulate in blood and help form clots.

Doctors say they can only be used within five days of donation, which makes them highly sought after by blood donation banks.

"It’s something that’s a truly critical need, a feast or famine," donor phlebotomist Maria Webb told the Coloradoan.

"He is here like clockwork every month," Webb said. "Ed is a huge inspiration."
