WELLINGTON, Colo. – An unoccupied structure was burned and several homes were evacuated north of Wellington following a grass fire Thursday afternoon.

The fire, dubbed the Freedom Acres Fire, was about 100 acres in size and was burning near County Road 7 west of I-25. As of 5:30 p.m., the fire was 100 percent contained.

The homes were evacuated as a precaution, according to Wellington Fire Department spokeswoman Rachael Gonzales. Residents were allowed back in the area shortly after the fire was contained, Gonzales added.

The cause of the fire is unknown.

Firefighters said crews would remain on the scene to mop up and monitor any hot spots.

In all, 16 firefighters from four different agencies worked to control and extinguish the fire.
