PITKIN COUNTY, Colo.- The Freeman Fire burning near Ruedi Reservoir is 15 percent contained as of Sunday evening. It has grown to over 294 acres.
The fire was reported shortly after 3 p.m. Saturday near Freeman creek which is near the town of Meredith.
Firefighters responded from Basalt and Thomasville, according to a press release from Pitkin County officials.
The campground at the east end of the reservoir was evacuated voluntary and homeowners in the area were put on notice to prepare for evacuation.
The fire was burning on Forest Service land north of Frying Pan Road and there was no containment.
Crews were working to build a line around the east and west edges of the fire with the help of three helicopters, hot shot fire teams and hand crews.
The Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control said it was sending one of its multi-mission aircraft to aid in the firefight.
There are no evacuation notices or pre-evacuation notices at this time, according to Kate Jerman a spokesperson for the Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Management Unit.
Some activity on the Reservoir may by limited due to water-bucket drops but there are no road or trail closures.
