COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A former Fort Carson soldier has been convicted of child abuse resulting in the death of his infant daughter.
The Gazette reports a jury concluded Thursday that 22-year-old Roderick Elam caused brain and liver injuries that led to his 2-month-old daughter's death in 2011. He is due to be sentenced March 13 on two felony child abuse counts.
Elam's attorneys had argued he was pressured by police into taking responsibility for the injuries.
He still faces charges of violating terms of his bail bond after prosecutors say he managed to avoid pre-trial supervision for more than a month.
Elam's wife, Lakeria Shazarea Grant, also faces trial in April on a charge of child abuse resulting in death. She is accused of failing to act upon her daughter's medical needs.
