Coroner ID's employee of University of Colorado Hospital fatally shot by police on Wednesday

DENVER - The coroner has identified 50-year-old Joseph Oliver Gorden as the hospital employee fatally shot by police during a confrontation at Anschutz Medical Campus on Wednesday night.

In a Friday statement, the Adams County coroner said a ruling on the cause and manner of Gorden's death remains under investigation.

Police responded Wednesday evening to emergency calls about a suicidal man in the University of Colorado Hospital parking lot at Anschutz Medical Campus. When they tried to contact the man, he took off in a sport utility vehicle.

A short chase ended at the intersection of 16th Avenue and Quentin Street, where the suspect was shot. He was transported to CU Hospital, about 100 yards away, where he was soon pronounced dead.

Police have not released any information about why the officer fired at Gorden, but a witness said that he had been driving wildly out of a parking garage just moments before the shooting.

"I was right there three cars away when it all happened. It was so scary I looked over and saw him break out the parking garage and I ducked behind my car when I heard the shots," the witness told 7NEWS. "That guy was just crazy he didn't care who he hurt when he flew through there."

At the time of the shooting, Gorden was an employee at CU Hospital, but officials said he had recently submitted his resignation, which was scheduled to take effect on March 28.
