Durango skier Peter Carver killed in avalanche near Silverton

2 other victims survived the avalanche

DURANGO, Colo. - Authorities say a 23-year-old Durango man was killed and another was injured when their backcountry skiing group was caught in an avalanche near Silverton.

The Durango Herald reports Peter Carver died Saturday afternoon while skiing north of Gladstone outside the boundaries of Silverton Mountain Ski Area.

Two other members of the group survived the avalanche. John Duncan Rothwell, 53, suffered a possible broken femur, while Nate Klema, 23, escaped the slide without serious injuries.

Forecasters with the Colorado Avalanche Information Center are expected to visit the scene to determine what triggered the avalanche, which occurred on land owned by the Bureau of Land Management.
