Driver fleeing police in Longmont crashes, kills another driver, injures 3 others

LONGMONT, Colo. - One person is dead and three others injured after a driver fled from police, then crashed into another car.

The crash happened Wednesday night at 17th Avenue and Main Street in Longmont.

Longmont police told 7NEWS an officer tried to stop the driver on 17th because he was weaving in and out the lane, but the driver instead sped up. Police said the driver ran a red light at Main Street and crashed into the other car.

Police arrested Pablo Bustillos at the scene of the crash. Bustillos is suspected of being under the influence of narcotics, but test results are pending, investigators said.

The 21-year-old driver of the other car was rushed to Longmont United Hospital (LUH), but died from his injuries. The Boulder County coroner identified the deceased driver as Dale Johnson. An autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death is pending.

Two women in the suspect's vehicle were also injured. A 23-year-old woman was airlifted to Denver HealthMedical Center. A 24-year-old woman was transported to LUH. Both have significant injuries, but are expected to survive, according to police.

A dog that had been in the suspect's vehicle was also transported to the Animal Emergency Hospital, police said. The dog was treated and due to be released.

Bustilllos is being held in the Boulder County Jail.

Bustillos has a significant criminal and driving history and also had an outstanding arrest warrant for a parole violation, police said.

The intersection was shut down at 10 a.m. Thursday while police continued the investigation.
