AURORA, Colo. - The car driver who hit and killed an off-duty police officer riding a motorcycle Monday has been arrested.
Off-duty Littleton Police Officer Kevin Denner died Monday when a driver turned in front of his motorcycle at the intersection of East Belleview Avenue and De Gaulle Street in Aurora. The motorcycle hit the passenger side of the Toyota car.
Aurora Police said Denner was riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle and was wearing a helmet, but it was knocked off during the crash.
Although there are no stop signs for Belleview, police said they believed the driver of the Toyota failed to yield the right of way as required.
Aurora Police told 7NEWS the driver, Jemal Abdelkader Dawed, 37, was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide, driving while under the influence of alcohol, careless driving and failure to yield the right of way.
The City of Littleton issued a statement Monday evening saying Officer Denner is survived by his father, a wife, and two young children, ages eight and nine.
The city said a memorial fund will be established for his family.
