The fire chief says a dog woke up a family and alerted them to a fire at their home in the Perry Park neighborhood in Douglas County.

The fire destroyed the home on Winged Foot Court, near Larkspur.

Law enforcement officials on scene told Denver7 that the fire started around 5 a.m. and that all of the residents got out safely. The house is a total loss. Flames reached more than 30 feet in the air. Denver7 reporter Kyle Horan witnessed pieces of the roof collapsing inward. Our news helicopter had to leave the area because of increased wind.

"People have been asking about the trees," said Larkspur Fire Chief Stuart Mills. "With the weather and the cold temperatures, the chances of it spreading to the trees is very, very slim. If it does, we'll put it right out."

There was some concern about the family's dog, but Larkspur Fire Chief Stuart Mills told Denver7 the dog woke the family up when the house was burning. The dog is OK.

More than two dozen fire fighters and other first responders were on scene. The flames had died down considerably as of 7:15 a.m.

"When we knew that it had vented the roof, we knew that it was pretty well involved," said Mills. "We knew we needed additional engines here to help pump additional water."
