GOLDEN, Colo. -- Officials in Jefferson County are noticing a disturbing pattern of pets being left alone inside hot cars.
In an effort to educate the public about the dangers, Jefferson County Animal Control is partnering with Golden’s Animal Control.
On Wednesday, July 26, officials will be in be outside the main courthouse to talk to visitors about the risks. Staff will be on hand from 10 to 11 a.m. and again from 1-2 p.m. These appearances will take place twice a month during the summer.
At the court complex, people have left at least 20 dogs alone in cars this year. Just this month, a deputy rescued a dog suffering in 123-degree heat.
"It's sad. It's just sad. They can't unlock the doors themselves. Why take them? They're just like a kid," said dog owner Irene Guzman.
An aggressive effort that comes on the heels of a new state law allowing you to rescue a dog from dangerous conditions. Under the law that goes into effect on August 9th, you can be granted immunity if you make an effort to find the owner, take notice of the car’s make and location, in addition to contacting a law enforcement agency.
