Dispatcher, retired police officer dead in suspected murder-suicide in Canon City

A Canon City police dispatcher and retired well-known police officer died in what authorities are calling a murder-suicide.

The Pueblo Chieftain reported Saturday (http://bit.ly/1onUq9J ) that Priscilla Samento was found dead at her home Thursday night, along with her husband, Daniel Samento . Officers went to check on the 49-year-old dispatcher after she failed to show up for work and didn't answer phone calls.

Authorities believe that Daniel Samento killed his wife and then committed suicide. Police were investigating the motive.

Canon City Police Chief  Paul Schultz said Daniel Samento, 56, had retired Oct. 28, 2011, after 30 years with Canon City police. Priscilla Samento was a 21-year veteran of the Canon City police dispatch team.

"We are in a deep state of mourning," Schultz said on Friday. "These were excellent people, excellent employees, and they served the community here exceptionally well. We are -- literally -- in a state of shock."
