FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Two rifles and other police equipment were stolen out of an unmarked sport utility vehicle belonging to the Larimer County Sheriff's Office amid a series of other vehicle burglaries in the Registry Ridge neighborhood of Fort Collins.
The patrol sergeant who uses the SUV reported several missing items and provided all of the related serial numbers to be sent out to agencies across the state, said Sheriff's Office spokesman John Schulz. The sergeant was not identified.
Schulz said Fort Collins police responded to the report of the vehicle thefts at 7:28 a.m. on Feb 1.
The items stolen from the sergeant's SUV were:
- One portable radio
- Traffic spikes
- One camouflage non-ballistic vest carrier with a Velcro panel that displays the word "Sheriff"
- One .308-caliber rifle with scope
- One .223-caliber rifle
Because the items were taken in Fort Collins, Schulz said that city's police are leading the investigation. If anyone has information, they are asked to call Detective Sara Lynd at 970-221-6557 or Crime Stoppers at 970-221-6868.
Schulz added that the Sheriff's Office has started an internal investigation to determine if policies or procedures relating to the stolen weapons and equipment were properly followed.
