DENVER – Colorado could be one of the first places in the world to get a working Hyperloop high-speed travel system.
A route that would run from Cheyenne, Wyoming to Pueblo, Colorado with another leg extending to Vail was chosen as one of the top 10 proposals worldwide by Hyperloop One.
"We know we can’t just build our way out of congestion here in Colorado with one solution, let’s say just highways, that’s why we’re exploring so much," Amy Ford, a Colorado Department of Transportation spokeswoman said.
Hyperloop One has already tested a full-scale version of the Hyperloop system, which uses electric propulsion to send a pod through a low-pressure tube at speeds similar to an airline.
A Hyperloop route along the Front Range would allow travelers to reach their destinations within minutes. The Rocky Mountain Hyperloop team said the following travel times would be possible with Hyperloop:
Denver to Greeley: 6 min
Denver to Fort Collins: 9 min
Denver to Vail: 9 min
Denver to Colorado Springs: 9 min
Colorado Springs to Pueblo: 6 min
Hyperloop One is entering into a private-public partnership with the Colorado Department of Transportation to study the feasibility of building a Hyperloop system along the Front Range.
"We are excited to partner with Hyperloop One in exploring the next step of feasibility of this innovative technology, potentially transforming how Colorado moves," said CDOT Executive Director Shailen Bhatt. "The Hyperloop technology could directly align with our goals of improving mobility and safety in Colorado, and we have been encouraged by the continued progress the technology is taking."
Hyperloop One said it will “commit meaningful business and engineering resources and work closely with each of the winning teams/routes to determine their commercial viability.”
Other winning routes in the United States include Chicago to Columbus to Pittsburgh, Dallas to Laredo to Houston and Miami to Orlando. The rest are in other countries: Bengaluru to Chennai in India, Mumbia to Chennai in India, Edinburgh to London in the UK, Glasgow to Liverpool in the UK, Mexico City to Guadalajara in Mexico and Toronto to Montreal in Canada.
