Denver metro Toys for Tots short 30,000 gifts; some events may be cut

DENVER - Due to a massive shortage of gifts, some Toys for Tots charitable holiday events in the metro area may be canceled this year.

Officials say requests from Toys for Tots can't be filled because of a lack of donations and because of a shortage of distribution staff.

"We're about 20,000 to 30,000 toys short right now," said U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Pete Leyva, coordinator of the Aurora program, which serves seven counties.

Toys for Tots is a 65-year-old U.S. Marine Corps charitable program that provides toys to disadvantaged children.

To make up for the shortage, Leyva and the five Marines working for him out of Aurora are having to short some of the larger orders to fill others, he said.
