Denver International Airport says 2012 was its busiest year yet for passenger traffic.

Airport officials said Thursday that a record 53.1 million travelers passed through the airport last year. That's up 0.6 percent from the previous record of about 52.8 million passengers in 2011.

The airport had a busy holiday travel season. It had its busiest December ever with almost 4.3 million passengers in December 2012 and its busiest November ever with almost 4.2 million in November 2012.

Icelandair, Spirit Airlines and Volaris all launched passenger flights from Denver in 2012.

Despite the increase in passenger traffic in December, the airport only handled 46.7 million pounds of cargo in the month, down from 50.5 million pounds in December 2011.
