DENVER - A Democrat-controlled committee has defeated a proposal from a Republican Weld County representative to make it a crime to perform abortions.

One Republican lawmaker joined six Democrats on the committee to defeat the bill Tuesday on a 7-4 vote. Republican Rep. Kathleen Conti called the measure "too extreme."

The legislation, proposed by Rep. Stephen Humphrey, would have banned abortions in Colorado and make it a class 3 felony to perform them.

The bill would have exempted cases where a doctor performed an abortion to prevent the death of the mother and when an unborn child died accidentally during medical treatment.
