DENVER – A Louisiana man shot and killed a homeless man while trying to steal the man’s marijuana and other belongings, according to Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey.

Makhail Purpera, 29, was formally charged Thursday in the shooting death of Wayland Busby, 54, in early November in south Denver.

Busby was living in a tent near South Platte River Drive and Dartmouth Avenue when his body was found by a Denver Park Ranger during a routine check of the area.

Purpera remains in custody in the Denver Detention Center. He is also wanted in Gonzales, Louisiana for two counts of attempted murder in connection with a shooting that occurred there in August.
