DA: 17-year-old Thornton boy charged as an adult with murder in stabbing death of other teen

THORNTON, Colo. - A 17-year-old Thornton boy has been charged as an adult with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of another teen, Adams County District Attorney Dave Young said Monday.

The defendant, Matthew James Trujillo, is accused of stabbing 18-year-old Anthony Benavidez in the throat during a fight in the early morning hours of Jan. 4, police said.

Police received a report of a fight in the 4200 block of East 100th Avenue at about 1:45 p.m. By the time officers arrived on the scene, the other males involved in the fight had fled the scene.

Benavidez was left behind, with a serious throat injury, and died from his injuries, Thornton police said.

Police have not revealed a motive in the killing.
