LYONS, Colo. - The driver of an SUV was arrested after the vehicle struck and killed a 47-year-old bicyclist in Lyons Saturday evening.
A Boulder County Sheriff's Office spokesman, Sgt. Nick Goldberger, said the SUV was going the wrong direction when the fatal crash occurred at 5:11 p.m.
Goldberger said the vehicle was going westbound in the eastbound lane of Main Street, but added that the vehicle could have been making a left turn.
“It’s a little bit closer to home because this is our town and we know a lot of people around," Goldberger said. "And I think we also know, at least the driver, and I have to double check with the bicyclist as well. So it’s terrible. It hits home.”
The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office and Colorado State Patrol investigated the fatal crash.
The driver, 69-year-old Patrick Allen Ward, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide, DUI, careless driving resulting in death and prohibited weapon.
Two people rendered first aid to the cyclist but he was declared dead on scene at 5:36 p.m.
The identity of the cyclist has not been released.
