PITKIN COUNTY, Colo. - A cyclist died while climbing Independence Pass, east of Aspen, on Saturday afternoon, the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office said.
The 51-year-old male cyclist collapsed a short distance from the summit, at about mile marker 60 on Highway 82, Deputy Jesse Steindler told the Aspen Times.
The sheriff's office received the call at about 1:36 p.m. Witnesses on scene began performing CPR on the fallen cyclist before emergency responders arrived.The man could not be revived, and he was pronounced dead at the scene, the sheriff's office said.
Identification of the deceased was being withheld pending notification of next of kin. Deputy Steindler said it is believed the victim was a local resident.
