BOULDER, Colo. — An embattled coach of the CU Buffaloes has resigned after being asked to step down by University of Colorado at Boulder Athletics.
Joe Tumpkin, an assistant coach with the team, resigned effective Jan. 31 after being investigated by police over allegations brought up in court in early January. Tumpkin's ex-girlfriend filed for restraining orders in court amid allegations of domestic abuse.
According to the Athletics Director Rick George, the values of the university do not align with allegations against Tumpkin that surfaced in court records.
"Furthermore, we need to move forward to ensure we do not have gaps in our coaching staff as we build the team and sign new recruits," George said.
As Tumpkin departs, he will receive two months of severance pay, a payout for unused vacation time and compensation for achieving an appearance in a bowl game. All told, his final paycheck from the university will be $79,299.
Before CU Athletics asked Tumpkin to step down, he had been suspended by the university.
Head Coach Mike MacIntyre will begin the process of hiring a new assistant coach. Practices in spring begin on Feb. 22.
