COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Colorado Springs police say an AWOL Fort Carson soldier who led police on a chase Wednesday and then died of a gunshot wound actually shot himself.

Previous reports said Benjamin David Corson, 27, had sustained life-threatening injuries in the incident and died later, reported the Gazette.

Corson was wanted in connection to three robberies from September. When police caught up with him Wednesday, he led officers on a chase before his pickup truck jumped a curb and crashed violently, the newspaper reported.

He was a private with the 3rd Brigade Combat Team of the 4th Infantry Division. He had been in the Army for about five years and served one tour in Iraq.

Corson had recently finalized a divorce as well, the Gazette reported.
