BOULDER, Colo. - A speeding driver on U.S. 36 early Saturday morning lost control, went into oncoming traffic and caused a crash that ended with one of his passengerds dead.

Troopers said Kevin Winnie, 22, was driving a Volkswagen Jetta westbound on U.S. 36 near Longhorn Road, north of Boulder, when he went into a curve at a high rate of speed and crossed into oncoming traffic at about 5 a.m.

The Jetta hit an Audi head-on, then went off the highway and rolled multiple times, troopers said.

Two passengers, both 21, were ejected. One died, and the other was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Winnie had moderate injuries and was also taken to the hospital.

The Audi's driver had minor injuries.

"Excessive speed and alcohol and/or drug use are suspected as contributing factors in the crash," troopers said in a news release.

Charges are pending against Winnie, according to the CSP.
